US Democrats want sanctions on Russian state debt, banks

WASHINGTON, Jan 13 (PRIME) -- The draft sanctions against Russia presented by the U.S. Democrats late on Wednesday includes a prohibition on transactions with primary and secondary state debt, and restrictions on some banks that might include Sberbank, VTB and Gazprombank in case of invasion of Ukraine. 

"The bill would also prohibit transactions on Russia’s primary and secondary sovereign debt and authorize sanctions on Russia’s extractive industries as well as on providers of specialized financial messaging services (e.g., SWIFT)," the bill read.

"(The bill) requires the President to impose sanctions on three or more financial institutions from the following: Sberbank, VTB, Gazprombank, VEB.RF, The Russian Direct Investment Fund, Credit Bank of Moscow, Alfa Bank, Rosselkhozbank (Russian Agricultural Bank), Otkritie Financial Corporation Bank, Promsvyazbank, Sovcombank, and Transkapitalbank," the document read.

The senators also proposed a U.S. $500 million financial aid to Ukraine in case of deterioration of the situation in the country.
